Specifying Woven Cloth Before Purchase

Those four blocks travel together on one specification sheet, and a delivery is accepted or rejected against that sheet, not against a hand feel. The order of the blocks matters: yarn and weave set the structure, weight fixes the mass per unit area, dyeing and finishing set color and shrinkage, and the tests convert all of it into numbers a mill and a buyer can both read.
Yarn and weave come first
A woven cloth begins as two sets of yarns interlaced at right angles: warp lengthwise, weft crosswise. The yarn itself is described by its spinning system. Ring-spun yarn is drafted and twisted from a roving, which gives a fiber arrangement that runs in a spiral through the yarn body; open-end yarn is spun in a rotor, which wraps fibers around a core and produces a more uniform, slightly harsher strand at lower cost. The two spin systems behave differently in the loom and in the finished garment, so the specification names the system rather than saying only "cotton yarn."
The interlacing pattern is the weave. Plain weave passes each weft over one warp end and under the next. Twill passes the weft over two or more ends and under one, producing a diagonal line across the face of the cloth. That diagonal has a direction, called the twill direction: a right-hand twill rises to the right, a left-hand twill rises to the left. The direction is written down because it affects how the cloth reflects light, how it drapes, and how it is cut. A specification that omits twill direction leaves the mill free to deliver either one.
Stretch is a separate line item. If elastane or another stretch fiber is present, the sheet states the percentage, the direction of stretch (warp, weft, or both), and the recovery target, meaning how far the cloth returns toward its original dimension after being stretched. Recovery is measured after a defined extension and a defined rest period, so the test method and the rest time belong on the sheet.

What does weight in oz/yd² and g/m² actually tell a buyer?
Weight is mass per unit area, and it is the fastest single indicator of what a cloth can do. In the United States trade, woven cotton weight is commonly quoted in ounces per square yard; most of the rest of the world quotes grams per square meter. The two are not interchangeable by eye, and a specification should carry both so that no conversion is done at the counter. One ounce per square yard equals approximately 33.9 grams per square meter.
Weight is measured on a conditioned sample cut with a defined area, usually a circular cutter, and weighed on a calibrated balance. The result depends on the conditioning atmosphere, because cotton takes up and releases moisture with the air. A cloth weighed bone dry and the same cloth weighed at standard textile conditioning can differ enough to move a delivery outside a tolerance band. That is why the specification names the conditioning standard and the tolerance, for example plus or minus five percent, rather than a single target number.
Weight also interacts with the other blocks. A heavier weft requires a loom setting that holds the pick density; a lighter warp at the same weight may need more ends per inch. When a buyer changes weight without changing yarn count, the cover factor changes and the cloth may become more open or more closed than the sample that was approved.
Dyeing and finishing: rope, slasher, and what the wash does
Indigo dyeing of cotton yarn is done by one of two main routes. In rope dyeing, the yarn is formed into a thick rope, dipped in successive indigo dye baths with air oxidation between dips, and then opened, sized and wound. In slasher dyeing, the yarn sheet passes through the dye range in a flat, parallel form. The two routes build the indigo on the yarn differently, and the difference shows in how the color fades.
After weaving, the finishing route is named on the specification. Raw, sometimes called loomstate, means the cloth has not been washed or treated beyond what the loom and the sizing required. Rinsed means a wash has removed size and some surface indigo. Stonewash uses abrasive media to wear the surface. Enzyme finishing uses cellulase enzymes to attack the cotton surface and produce a softer hand and a lighter face without stones. Each route changes weight, shrinkage and color, so the specification states the route and the target shade together.
Shrinkage is stated as a percentage in warp and in weft, measured after a defined wash procedure at a defined temperature. Skew, also called torque or bias, is the twisting of the cloth after washing, and it is measured as the angle or displacement of a weft line from square. Both numbers belong on the sheet because a garment pattern is cut to allow for them.
How is a delivery accepted or rejected?
Acceptance rests on tests, and the specification names the method for each one. The four-point inspection system assigns defect points to a roll according to the length and severity of each defect, then compares the total against a maximum allowed per hundred square yards or per hundred linear yards. The result is a number, not an opinion.
Tearing strength measures the force needed to propagate a tear in the cloth, and it is reported in grams or newtons, with the direction of the test stated. Tensile strength measures the force to break a strip, again with direction and strip dimensions. Abrasion resistance is measured by rubbing the cloth against a standard abrasive under a defined load until a yarn breaks or a hole forms, and the result is a cycle count. Colorfastness covers rubbing, washing, light and perspiration, each with its own test and its own gray scale rating for staining and for change in color.
A delivery is accepted when every one of these results falls inside the tolerance written on the sheet. If the sheet does not name the method, the result cannot be compared to anything, and the argument moves to the sample room.
Reading the technical sheet before the sample is cut
A specification sheet is read from the top down. Yarn count and spinning system, ends per inch and picks per inch, weave and twill direction, weight with conditioning standard and tolerance, stretch percentage and recovery, dyeing route, finishing route, shrinkage and skew limits, then the test list with methods and acceptance limits. Fiber content and care labeling are stated for the destination market, because the United States and the European Union require different fiber names and different order of information on the label.
Certifications and restricted substances belong on the same sheet when the buyer’s market requires them. The specification states which certification is claimed, which substances are limited, and which test report is expected with the shipment. A sheet that lists a certification without naming the issuing body and the scope leaves the claim unverifiable.
Sampling follows the sheet. A mill makes a sample to the written numbers, the buyer tests the sample against the same methods, and only then is bulk ordered. When a number on the sheet is vague, the sample becomes the real specification, and the bulk delivery is judged against a piece of cloth rather than a document. Writing the numbers down first is what keeps the sample and the shipment in the same conversation.
