A hand-forged gift on a deadline
A forged gift fails at the calendar, not at the anvil. The hours have to be counted before the fire is lit, not after.
A forged gift takes as long as the operations inside it, and the honest way to know whether it will be ready is to count those operations before the forge is lit. Break the piece into its moves, give each move a number of heats, add the finishing that nobody sees, and the total tells you whether the deadline is a plan or a wish. The arithmetic is the same one every maker of small things runs; only the units change.
How do you estimate the hours inside a forged gift?
Start with the drawing, not the clock. Every forged object is a list of operations in an order: taper the end, isolate the shoulder, draw out the stem, scroll the finial, punch or drift the hole. For each operation, ask how many times the piece goes back in the fire, because the heat is the unit a forge works in. A heat on a small coal fire runs two to five minutes of real work before the bar has to go back, and a beginner loses half of each heat to positioning the tongs and finding the anvil face again.
Then add the part the metal never sees. Cutting the stock, cleaning off scale, wire brushing, filing the sharp edges a gift must not have, and applying whatever finish the piece will carry. On a small item the finishing often equals the forging time, and it is the part first-time makers forget entirely. A rule worth keeping: estimate the forging, double it for a beginner, then add finishing again on top. If the doubled figure still fits inside the evenings you actually have, the gift is real. If it does not, choose a smaller piece rather than a faster lie.
Which small pieces can a beginner finish in one weekend?
The pieces that finish are the ones with few operations and forgiving proportions. A wall hook is the classic: one taper, one scroll or bend, one flat area for a screw hole. A bottle opener is one slot punched and two tapers. A simple S hook, a plant hanger bracket, a letter opener forged from a short bar, a key ring leaf on round rod: each of these is three to five operations, and each operation is one or two heats for a smith who has made the move before.
What defeats a weekend is not size but precision. Anything that must close like a latch, balance like a knife, or carry a decorative twist that shows every stumble will eat the margin you counted on. The forgiving pieces share a property: the eye forgives their asymmetry, because a hook that leans a degree still reads as handmade rather than wrong. Pick the piece whose success does not depend on the operation you have never done.
The tools side of the count is worth a sentence too. Time at the anvil is also spent on tongs that fit the work, because a piece held badly costs heats you did not plan for, and on the state of the fire, which decides how much of each heat is working time.
Where the estimate usually breaks
Estimates fail at three places. The first is the stock: a bar a size too small means an extra upset or a different design halfway through, and mid-course redesigns are the real deadline killers. The second is the scroll or the bend that has to match nothing but itself; a freehand curve is quick to make and slow to make twice, so any piece with paired elements doubles its hardest operation. The third is finishing the surface to gift standard, where the recipient will hold the piece and read every hammer mark with a thumb.
The fix is a test piece, and this is the part that feels like waste and is not. Forge the same scroll on scrap before the real bar, and the clock reading becomes honest: whatever the test took, the real one takes the same, and you have bought certainty with ten minutes of coal. Smiths who keep a notebook write the count down, heats and minutes, and the second gift of the same design is estimated from the record rather than from hope.
How do knitters run the same count on their side?
The same question, in another material, has a tidier instrument. A knitter planning a gift does not estimate hours in the abstract; she counts stitches, because the knitting entry’s account of gauge turns time into arithmetic: so many stitches to the inch, so many rows to the gift, so many rows to the evening. The Skein Almanac keeps an entry on exactly this, counting stitches to plan knitted gifts rather than guessing the hours, which is the same refusal to hope that the test scroll represents at the anvil.
What the two crafts share is the unit. The smith counts heats and the knitter counts stitches, and both counts convert a vague wish into a number that can be compared with the calendar. Neither craft forgives the estimate made after the material is committed, and both reward the maker who writes the number down. A forge notebook and a gauge swatch are the same tool wearing different aprons.
So the order of work for a forged gift is fixed: draw the piece, list the operations, count the heats, test the uncertain one, then look at the calendar with real numbers. If the count says the piece will not finish, shrink the piece, never the care. A small hook delivered on time beats a gate hinge still sitting in the fire bucket.
